A huge flock of cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) has descended on the ash tree on our front lawn. They are ravenously stripping it bare of its berries.
Unfortunately, our front living room windows seem to be confusing a few of them, and we've had several hit them head on. Even after we put up hawk silhouettes, a few birds whacked the windows.
Up to this point, the blows seem to have been glancing, and there has only been one casualty. There was almost a second, though. This fellow was struggling on the ground below the window. J and I took turns holding it in our warm hands and it eventually opened its eyes and then - about 10 minutes later - flew off on its own accord.
Now we have a couple of blankets hanging to cover the windows. Since the silhouettes didn't seem to be working, we thought that that trick just might. And we haven't had a collision since we did that. Phew!
