Trick or Treat?

Trick or Treat?
Originally uploaded by D&J Huber
We had a wonderful Hallowe'en evening. James, Lindsay, Makenna, and Dawson invited us to their house for pizza. After that, the kids all got dressed up as a penguin, princess, and lion and we went out and ransacked the neighborhood for candy.

After the first house, Eli and Makenna got the hang of the trick-or-treat thing. Fast learners!

After filling their treat bags for their parents (after all, all of that candy wouldn't be very good for them, would it?), we went back to J & L's house and watched James blast off a few fireworks in the backyard. Awhile later, after little Dawson had gone to bed, the big neighborhood Hallowe'en fireworks show lit up the sky. The front yard was a perfect vantage point, and the kids had a good time watching (with Makenna asking for more when it was all over).

I don't think that we've been out for Hallowe'en since we were teenagers, and I forgot how fun it can actually be. It was a really great evening with friends, and all of the activities were a complete riot.

James gets the fireworks show going

James put on a small fireworks show for us in their backyard. Elijah thought that it was great. Later in the evening, the community put on their big Hallowe'en fireworks display (for all of you not living in BC, for some odd reason everyone in this province plays with exploding fire on the craziest night of the year), which we were able to watch in all its glory from James and Lindsay's front yard.

Elijah had a very fun Hallowe'en. Pumpkins, penguin outfit, lots of time with friends, candy, fireworks... what more can a little guy ask for?

(Edit: Later in the afternoon we made a second attempt and, for whatever reason, Eli was more amenable to pictures, so we got many more. They have been added to the Flickr set.)

Thanksgiving dinner, 2008

Thanksgiving dinner, 2008

What a fun Thanksgiving - and a wonderful preceding week. Mum and Dad Hiller and Auntie Shirley were here to play with Elijah and hang out with us. Of course, they also did way too much work around the house.

Here we all are (minus Dezene, who is the photographer) at Thanksgiving dinner, 2008.

(BTW, that's sparkling apple juice. Neither pregnant mom nor little Eli are all that into wine, of course.)

This year be charcoal barbecued our turkey. It was a bit of an adventure, but it worked out perfectly. Our turkey had a nice, smokey flavor; there was lots of room in the oven for other food; and the house didn't heat up to 500 degrees.

I think that we'll do it again next year!

If any of you want to give it a try, here's the recipe. It can be done with charcoal (our preference) or propane.

Here we are, just before feasting on turkey and stuffing ourselves with sweet potato.

Birthday girl

A LABEL MAKER!!!!
Originally uploaded by D&J Huber
We celebrated Joyel's birthday a bit early this year, because her parents and aunt were here, and they wanted to party! We were treated to a nice dinner at Moxie's and then Joyel opened a bunch of presents (with help from Elijah).

Joyel now has new boots, a dress, and a label maker. All the gifts are wonderful! Thanks to everyone. And, Joyel is VERY excited about labeling everything in the house.
