Out for some sledding this morning on a rare snow day in Vancouver. It was actually pretty cold for this part of the world. Something like -8°C (that's about 17°F). The boys had a riot, of course! Then inside for some hot cocoa and lunch.

Elijah's fifth birthday party a week or so ago was a blast. His cousins, Maddie and Cole, came to visit us here on PEI. It was a fairly low-key event, which made it even better. We started the day with a present, had some fun with the cousins. Then we opened a few more presents, then went for pizza at Pizza Shack (not Hut, mind you) in Tignish. We finished the day off with a (cup) cake.

On our trip to Vancouver we stayed at a hotel in Cache Creek (British Columbia). The parking lot was mainly empty and covered in gravel and dust. This was very exciting for Elijah, and he spent his time zipping around on his bike and making sliding stops to kick up dust.

We drove back to Prince George today. The boys were great travelers. This photograph was taken at the Ashcroft Manor, which is where we ate lunch. After this point, they sat in the car for pretty much the rest of the trip, which was another five-and-a-half hours or so.

Elijah is learning how to read. On Saturday we took a trip with Oma and Opa to the local independent bookstore, Books & Co. He spent quite a bit of time looking at books. We bought a few for him and for us. Then we finished up our trip with a nice lunch and coffee, served at the in-store Cafe Voltaire. Quiche, paninis, muffins, soup. Yum!

It's one of our favorite Saturday morning activities.

We had planned on a short family vacation out at Jasper this weekend. So, we got up nice and early on Friday morning and headed out to the east of town on Highway 16. We were going to meet the boys' cousins, Auntie and Uncle, and Oma and Opa.

We had heard on the news that a propane truck had overturned on Tuesday morning, and that it had tied up the highway on that day and Wednesday. On Thursday the truck was still venting off propane, so they were letting cars through with a pilot car. This morning we checked the website and things were, presumably, in the same condition. Of course, all of this really draws out the question as to why on earth it should take three days to clear an accident scene on one of Canada's main cross-country highways.

Anyhow, we got out to the accident scene and found a big lineup. We spent about three hours there waiting for news from "the front." In the meantime, of course, the boys made friends with the truckers and other folks.

So, after our three hours they finally announced that no one was going to get through that day. We turned around, amidst lots of tears from the boys because they weren't going to see their cousins.

So, no vacation for us.

At last check at the Ministry of Transport, they were still expecting the accident to be blocking the highway by afternoon on Saturday. So, at least four-and-a-half days. Crazy.

The other day, Rick Mercer (Canadian comedian, for any non-Canucks reading this) made an appearance at UNBC.

He came because our little university raised the most money for the Spread the Net campaign. Considering that we were up against institutions that were five or even close to ten times our size, this was an amazing accomplishment.

After a bit of a pep rally, everyone went outside with Mr. Mercer to the Agora and cheered as a helicopter flew over us, filming us for part of an upcoming TV show.

All-in-all, it was quite a publicity coup for our little school. And, more importantly, the charitable donations from UNBC will allow for purchase almost 1900 mosquito nets (not to mention the many more because of generosity at other universities, colleges, and high schools) and an important reduction in malaria rates.

Elijah and his "snow blower" during another driveway clearing session. The temperatures here are well below average for this time of year, meaning tons of snow (click the picture and then look in the comments for a picture of the piles and piles of snow). We've talked to several people who have been in town for a few decades, and they don't remember piles of snow like this.

Thankfully, by this time next week, temperatures are predicted to be above freezing. It's going to be a sloppy mess, but soon we'll be saying good-bye to all of this white stuff. Right? Please!!?

Yesterday afternoon all of the cousins put together some socks packed with essentials for the Mustard Seed "Warm Feet for the Street" Christmas donation drive. You can see them holding some of the socks here.

The stuffed socks will be handed out to homeless folks in the community here in Calgary during their annual Christmas dinner tomorrow.

On the topic of Christmas charity, the campaign that I've been running for charity:water is about half way to its goal with only four days left in the campaign.

It's great being in Calgary. We have lots of free childcare! J and I got out to one of our favorite areas in town, Kensington. It's just a short jaunt down the hill from our family house, there are lots of stores to browse. And, best of all, there is some extremely excellent coffee to be had at the Roasterie (where, as the name suggests, they roast their beans right on site).

We are just now getting whacked by the first storm of this winter season. The meteorologists tell us that because it's a La Niña year, things might get a bit brutal before they get better. My main hope is the knowledge that the weatherman is wrong a decent percentage of the time.
